Are smokeless fuel burning back boilers legal .?

If gas prices continue to rise I would prefer to revert back to my old fashioned stove type boiler which used to run the central heating and hot water.. It was not so convenient but a lot less money to run now I think. And uming I dont live in a smokeless zone,could I burn wood ?
